Yeah, the application/zip media type is based on an email message from
the gophermaster at the University of Minnesota in 1993.

Since the gzip format is described in RFC 1952, it shouldn't take much
to persuade the relevant expert (Ned Freed) to register
application/gzip.  It would be nice to have application/xml+gzip but
that might be a harder sell
